Didactic walk of the native trees
Location and access:
The walk starts at the locality ⤜Vierge Jacques⤝ which you can reach from Virton by taking the road toward Etalle and turning to the right in Belle-vue. At that place you⤙ll find a big sign with the map of the walk. You can then follow the marking represented by a yellow rectangle. All along the journey, the native trees of the walk are indentified by an orange dot painted at the base of their trunk and their name is written on a small plaque.
History :
The didactic walk of the native trees was created in 1997 in order to make tourists aware as well as the natives to the triple part of the forest: ecology, economy and social.
- Ecology: We can realize about the diversity of species found in the Gaume⤙s forest and the quality of the ground which allows the natural regeneration.
- Economy: management and maintenance of a forest guarantee production of a quality wood.
- Social and didactic: The forest must be a welcoming place for the whole population.
Description:
This nice walk of 3.5 km will allow you to discover many native forest species while walking on the sides of the first Gaume⤙s cuesta. Grounds are composed of a mixing of sand and silt in which the forest widely settled. The didactic walk of the native trees matches in a way with the arboretum of Virton which, this one, gathers exotic species.
