The French soldiers were captured by the Germans after their defeat at the Battle of Rossignol, on August 22 1914. About 2600 soldiers and 3 generals were closed in a meadow. They were joined by the inhabitants who got caught by the German soldiers. On August 25, the French prisonners and 4 inhabitants from Rossignol were deported in Germany. On August 26, the 122 civilians (108 from Rossignol among which a woman, 7 from Breuvanne, 5 from Saint-Vincent and 2 from Tellancourt were shot near the bridge of Schoppach, in Arlon, by order of the German army, without being processed. The meadow in which they were penned in , got called "camp de la misère" which was the name of a peninsula used for penning French prisonners in Sedan during the war on 1870. The pietà that was offered by the priest of rossignol Joseph Hubert is located in front of the camp de la misère.rue de Neufchâteau
